There is no amount of expensive skin care products such as moisturizers that will do you wonders and improve your skin without following a certain skin care regimen. The  most basic and the first 3 steps of this regimen are of utmost importance – cleanse, tone and moisturize. These are the most important skin care secrets to good skin.

Cleanse

As much as possible, go natural when cleaning your skin and that means only oil and water. You don’t need to include all sorts of additives like SLS, colouring, artificial scents, parabens and detergents. These ingredients strip your skin of sensitive layers and will only cause skin irritations. No need to make your cleansing treatment very complicated. Simply wet your face and use castor oil to remove dirt. Gently massage castor oil on your face, rinse with water then wipe with a damp muslin cloth or cotton wool to take away excess oil and water.

Tone

Your next step is to rid your face of the last traces of castor oil by applying a toner using a cotton wool. An effective toner that is natural yet can prevent bacteria growth so that rashes and spots don’t develop is Flower Waters. You may also opt for toners with astringent properties to help reduce open pores and make the skin more taught. Toners with alcohol are a big no because they tend to cause dryness. Instead go for cold, rose water that is perfect for older skin, orange flower water or natural witch hazel which are all effective but not harsh.

Moisturise

This cannot be emphasized more than enough. Moisturizing is very important! Choose a facial cream/moisturizer that is perfect for your skin type especially if you have sensitive skin. Skin tends to lose moisture no matter what skin type you may have – normal, oily, dry or combination. Check product descriptions when buying moisturizers.

Aside from the above-mentioned basic steps, there are additional steps to skin care secrets and observing these will give you more radiant, younger-looking skin:

Sun cream

As much as possible, avoid the sun because the sun emits UV rays which is harmful to the skin and is known to speed aging. If you can’t avoid the sun, then make sure to protect yourself by using sun creams that offer maximum protection.

Use anti-oxidants

This is to counter free radicals that cause skin to age and wrinkle. Foods rich in Vitamins A, C and E, almonds, coconut and olive oil are some examples of what you can take that contain anti-oxidants.

Water


Good old drinking water has always been the best detoxifier and the best way to rehydrate skin. Drinking at least 8 glasses of 250 ml water is the best way to moisturize from within.

Serums

Improve tone and elasticity of skin by pampering it with serums that penetrate deeply into it. Twice daily use of serums about 5 minutes prior to moisturizing will bring better results – one in the morning and again before you hit the bed at night.

Weekly Facemask Treatment

Do a weekly face mask treatment such as yoghurt application and feel how soothing it feels. It is also a very good natural moisturizer. Below is the recipe and it works for all types of skin provided you don’t have any allergy to any of its ingredients.

-         a tbsp of natural yoghurt

-         a tbsp of honey (place in microwave to make it a bit gooey but not hot)

 

Combine all ingredients to get a smooth paste and let cool. With your fingers, smooth onto face and let set for 15 minutes. Use lukewarm water for rinsing then follow with a moisturizer.

Sleep

You will surely know a person who lacks sleep as their skin surely looks dull and dry. So make sure you get plenty of it. They didn’t call it “beauty rest” for nothing.
